Thebe Magugu x Wanda Lephoto’s Project 16.1.C launch event - Bubblegum Club

Thebe Magugu x Wanda Lephoto’s Project 16.1.C launch event

In the closing act of April — as we commemorated and celebrated National Freedom Day in South Africa — Bubblegum Club released our new cover feature spotlighting prolific designers Thebe Magugu and Wanda Lephoto in a piece titled: Collaborations of EVERYDAY RESISTANCE | Thebe Magugu and Wanda Lephoto.

The cover feature also looked at the designer’s Project 16.1.C collaboration, which culminated in the creation of the Sisterhood Salon Tee. Now, in honour of our freedom, our lives and Project 16.1.C itself, comes the launch event for the first of Magugu’s [MICRO]LABORATIONS.

An event powered by Jägermeister and presented by Bubblegum Club — where we will come together in joy to celebrate this collaborative occasion — with performances led by South African musicians and DJs who groove to the beat of their own tempo.

The event will focus on encouraging and facilitating engagement between creatives, in an effort to bridge the gap between attendees and their fellow artists.

Therefore, allowing for closer creative connections which will hopefully inspire future collaborations — as those who came before us have always said “Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu”.

In keeping with the spirit of collaboration and collective participation, our DJs and performers will be paired and there is a chance for the audience to guess who the pairings are.

Speaking about the significance of the collaboration to him in our previous conversation Lephoto shared:

This collaboration means so much to me, besides getting to collaborate with Thebe who I love, respect and am inspired by, it means so much to me that we get to collaborate on FREEDOM, something that means so much to the both of us.

Historically, many of the limitations faced by our people were bound to FREEDOM and not having any to be able to advocate for their deserved humanity. Project 16.1.C speaks to that idea of FREEDOM, the FREEDOM that has afforded us the opportunity to be able to fight for our dreams.

The horizons of what is possible, of what we can imagine and create and of the change(s) we can affect — broaden when we go together rather than when we go alone.

Our journeys of joy and pursuits of freedom are all connected — much like the ways we sway together on these radical dance floors we commune on in song and sweat.

Our dance floor is political, and in this here place, our bodies gyrate in rituals of resistance and remembrance.

Attendance is open to the public all you need to do is register: here!

NB: Not all registered parties will receive a final invite. Invitations are limited and will be sent to successful attendees at random.
