Sulene is a Diamond in the Rough - Bubblegum Club

Sulene is a Diamond in the Rough

South African born, New York-based, Sulene has already had a career that many musicians would be jealous of. She makes her living as a touring guitarist for acts including Nate Ruess (From fun.), Betty Who, and Candy Hearts, and composing the scores for a number of films and TV shows. Back in 2017, she released an EP under her own name called ‘Strange’ which was written in the 2 years she was touring the world with Nate Ruess (that got love from the likes of Billboard). And she even has a side project called ‘Liefie’.

Sulene’s entire life since she was 14 has been dedicated to making music so it’s no surprise that “Diamond”, the single off her upcoming album ‘Fire Escape’, is superb. It’s an upbeat indie synth-pop masterpiece. Think Postal Service meets Charli XCX with a chorus that’s as catchy as that collab would create. It’s a bittersweet number about meeting that special someone who makes your heart skip a beat. You want them to yourself but they’re more into sharing their love. It’s a universal theme that’s tackled with an openness from Sulene that makes it even more relatable. I know I’ve had heartbreaking nights where “You’re holding me but I’m grinding my teeth and it’s hard to say if it’s the buzz or the way that I really don’t know if you’re leaving with me”. A seesaw of joy and jealousy.

“Diamond” is the kind of song you’ll put on a playlist to dance around your room to whilst getting ready to go out because it just sounds so upbeat and fun, but one day you’re going to listen a bit too closely to the lyrics at the wrong time and catch feelings.

You can hear “Diamond” on all major streaming platforms this Friday.
