Bubblegum Residency, is a studio and production based residency established by the founders of Bubblegum Club with a mission to support, platform and develop the careers of emerging artists through opportunities to create and sell work. This past Saturday, saw the inaugural opening of our gallery space with our first successful resident’s solo exhibition. Titled 12 seconds and currently still showing at Bubblegum Gallery, the body of work was produced by our past resident Muofhe Manavhela, and explores through painting self-authored (re)presentations of self fabricated by Black femmes within their intimate worlds. With this we announce the open call for our next Bubblegum Residency open to artists working across and with various mediums/disciplines. From sculptors, to painters, photographers and ceramicists, if your work resides in the space of artistic creation, then this open call is for you!
Participating artists will receive studio space, curatorial support, press and marketing support, along with a stipend totalling R5000 for the production and exhibition of their work. The residency is purely production based, therefore, artists who submit developed ideas with a thorough production plan will stand a greater chance of selection. Applications are open to all artists/practitioners of all ages and the selected artist in residence will complete a month long full-time residency — where they will produce and install new work for exhibition at the Bubblegum Gallery in Braamfontein. Although situated in Joburg, applications are also open to artists who live outside of the city. However, these artists will be responsible for their own transport to and from the city, as well as for their own accommodation and living expenses while in Johannesburg.
