Established by the founders of Bubblegum Club, the Bubblegum Residency programme has been running with the aim to support, platform and develop the careers of emerging artists. Our dedication to supporting our local art community, and the young people that create and dream within it, has only grown since the original inauguration of both our artist residency program and Gallery space with our first resident, Muofhe Manavhela and her show, 12 seconds.
Bubblegum Club is now excited to announce another open call, aimed at curators, which will take place during October 2021. A discipline and methodology of world-building; of framing and of contextualising, curating and the role of the curator, have become progressively more embedded within and implicated in our relationship(s) with art, both as aesthetic and conceptual consumers and makers of. This open call will take the form of a curatorial residency, the first of its kind for Bubblegum Club.
The month long residency programme will take place between our gallery, studio and other locations in and around Johannesburg where Bubblegum will be exhibiting work. The successful applicant will get the exciting opportunity to work alongside Bubblegum Club in the curation of a pop-up exhibition showing the works to have come out of our artist residency programme thus far. Along with framing the exhibitions through text and critical thought.
Applicants are asked to apply with a curatorial proposal for the pop-up exhibition including the works available now in our shop. This proposal should be no longer than 700 words and show a good curatorial concept. Although located in Joburg, applications are also open to curators who live outside of the city. However, these individuals will be responsible for their own transport to and from Joburg, as well as for their own accommodation and living expenses while in the city.
