Continental writers open call: Bubblegum Club making the (Pan-African) circle bigger

“We face neither East nor West; We face forward.”

Kwame Nkrumah

2021 has been an exciting and affirming year for our organisation and collective. From the release of our 5 years of Bubblegum Club cover, to starting our Residency programme, to the opening of our Gallery, and being recognised amongst Dazed’s 100, “a global celebration of next-gen names leading change in their communities and across their fields,” there’s been much to get hyped about. And now, in making our creative circle bigger, we are looking for writers based in and working from the continent (Africa) to join our publishing team.

Our organisation is based in Johannesburg and works within a multi-faceted approach across platforms and mediums. With a team that has backgrounds in the arts, digital design, photography and cultural criticism amongst other skills — we take inspiration from cutting edge South African art, music and film to produce work that speaks not only to our local creative audiences but also to our global and continental ones.

The publishing division of our organisation, existing in the form of our online magazine: Bubblegum Club, seeks to cultivate space for and to engage with those narratives, creativity, imagination and H/histories of individuals of the global majority often relegated to the margins by dominant cultures. The stories we mediate and our way of telling them, springing from an aesthetic of the Black radical tradition, one that imagines beyond the constructs of borders, as Pan Africanist Congress founder Robert Sobukwe stated: “[We] wish to make it clear again that we are anti-nobody. We are pro-Africa. We breathe, we dream, we live Africa because Africa and humanity are inseparable.”
