The Thami Mnyele Fine Arts Awards

The Thami Mnyele Fine Arts Awards (TMFAA) is a contemporary fine arts competition hosted and sponsored by the CoE under the auspices of the Arts, Culture and Heritage (ACH) Directorate of the Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture (SRAC) Department. The competition and awards seek to inspire the passion that the late South African acclaimed resistance artist and activist Thamsanqa ‘Thami’ Mnyele had for art.

Sony Future Filmmaker Awards

The Sony Future Filmmaker Awards, a significant new initiative for short films that is open to submissions, offers unique opportunities for artists and filmmakers from all around the world.

The 30 successful filmmakers will be flown to Los Angeles to visit the Sony Pictures studio in Culver City, California, where they will participate in panel talks, workshops, and screenings to acquire unmatched insight into the world of filmmaking and special access to industry professionals. Sony World Photography Awards

The Sony World Photography Awards is the leading competition for photographers and artists working in photography. The Awards has elevated the careers of photographers since it began 16 years ago, making it one of the most prominent photography competitions in the world.

With multiple categories including professional, open, student and youth, the competition is open to all photographers at varying skill levels. The top prize is $25,000 and all entries are free.

To celebrate the diverse landscape of South Africa, Art Gazette has partnered with the South African Department of Agriculture, Land Reform & Rural Development, to run a national competition for artists in the region.

On behalf of Tshala Bese Uyavuna Consortiums, Art Gazette is commissioning new artwork, for the new serviced offices and heritage building of the South African Department of Agriculture, Land Reform & Rural Development in Pretoria.

Institute for Advanced Study Central European University: Writer in Residence fellowship

IAS CEU offers annually one Writer in Residence fellowship and one Visual/New Media Artist in Residence fellowship to provide selected artists with opportunities to conceptualize and create new works. These two residential fellowships (up to 5 months each with a minimum stay of 3 months) are offered on a competitive basis to writers and visual artists, working in creative writing (such as poetry, prose, drama, screen and playwriting) and in various visual media, including film and digital applications.

Thoughtworks Arts Wants To Send You To Mars

Thoughtworks Arts seeks two artists-in-residence for separate but parallel residencies on-site at Mars.college, an educational program, R&D Lab and an off-grid residential community in the desert area of Bombay Beach, California. Mars is geographically remote but digitally connected, cultivating a low-cost, high-tech lifestyle exploring emerging technologies.

Artists will receive online incubation and project facilitation through Thoughtworks’ global network of technologists, and a stipend of $11,000 to cover all expenses including transportation and living costs. Mandatory dates of the program run from 1 January to 31 March 2023, with arrival required at least a few days before the program commences. The two artists-in-residence will live in RVs (recreational vehicles) in the desert full-time throughout the program.

ENCLAVE LAND ART

ENCLAVE LAND ART as part of the program Cultura Resident of Consorci de Museus de la Comunitat Valenciana, with the support of the Vall de Gallinera council (Alicante, Spain) are glad to announce the open call for the fourth Edition of the Enclave Land Art Residency.

Submissions should focus on the dialogue between human beings and nature so as to create an artistic Land Art itinerary in the area.

Seven projects from different artistic disciplines will be developed and produced in the natural environment during the two weeks of the Art Residency, sharing experiences, ideas and a common goal.

All projects must take into consideration people’s interest in contemporary arts, aiming to give greater value to the area of Vall de Gallinera, promoting a deep and permanent conscience about the historical, cultural and traditional aspects of the territory through a dialogue between art and nature

Prague City of Literature: Two-Month Residency for foreign writers and translators

The project Prague City of Literature offers residency stays for foreign writers and translators. There are six residencies available for 2023, each lasting two months.

Prague City of Literature reimburses the resident for a return ticket, provides accommodation for free and a stipend of CZK 15,000 (approx. 600 euro) per month.

The accommodation and travel expenses are covered by the receiving organization; the residents will also receive a scholarship of CZK 15,000 (approx. €600) per month.

Airport Services Agent – Qatar Airways

Qatar Airways is currently recruiting for Airport Services Agent in Johannesburg, South Africa.

As an airport services agent, you will assist the operation by giving clients five-star service at the airport terminal and assisting in fostering a positive airport experience for passengers. You’ll make sure that the service is of a high standard and that security and safety regulations are followed.

Specific Accountabilities Include:

  • Liaising with check-in, transfer desk and other related areas for the smooth acceptance of passengers
  • Escorting and directing arriving and departing passengers to the respective areas such as hotel desk, visa counter, transfer desk, premium lounges and boarding gates
  • Assisting the Duty Officer in handling company materials and records
  • Liaising with the Ground Handling agent (GHA) for quick processing of hotel and transfer passengers

Researcher at the Institute for Creative Arts, Cape Town

The ICA (Institute for Creative Arts) is looking to hire a highly motivated individual with at least a Master’s degree and relevant research experience to serve as their new Researcher.

This is a full-time position, to be carried out in person on UCT’s Hiddingh Campus in Cape Town, from 1 January 2023. Note: in preparation for the full-time role, the selected candidate is required to work part-time (two days a week) on UCT’s Hiddingh Campus for a hand-over period running from 17 October – 15 December 2022.

Requirements:

  • A postgraduate degree (at least Masters) relevant to the ICA’s interdisciplinary focus.
  • At least three years experience working in a relevant professional environment.
  • Experience conducting research and writing content for a variety of audiences.
  • A record of published writing – in accredited journals and/or websites.
  • Excellent writing, editing and communication skills, and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency using: Apple iMac, MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint; E-mail; Website administration and social media platforms.

Young Womxn Studio Bursary

The Bag Factory is once again inviting applications for the Bag Factory Young Womxn Studio Bursary, funded by Artist, Sam Nhlengethwa, a Bag Factory alumni.

The Bag Factory Young Womxn Studio Bursary aims to support a femme artist in the early stages of their career (under 35) by providing rent-free studio space for a year, a customized mentoring program, opportunities for professional growth, curatorial and pastoral support, and the chance to exhibit new work in a solo exhibition at the Bag Factory.

The bursary was created in direct response to the acute demand in Johannesburg for safe, affordable workspaces for women artists. The Bag Factory Young Womxn Studio Bursary aims to create an area where artists may interact in a welcoming studio setting that encourages innovation, taking risks, trying new things, and exchanging ideas.

This programme will begin on 1 October 2022 and run until 30 September 2023.

Cambridge-Africa ALBORADA Research Fund 2022 for Sub-Saharan African (Including Sudan) Researchers

The Cambridge-Africa ALBORADA Research Fund supports pairs of researchers (post-doctoral level and above) from the University of Cambridge (or an affiliated institution such as the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute and NIAB) and sub-Saharan African institutions, across all disciplines, to initiate and/or strengthen research collaborations.

Fields of Grant: Applications should generally fall into one of these four research-related categories:

  1. Workshop/research training course, in Africa
  2. Travel between Cambridge and Africa
  3. Research Project
  4. Equipment

About the Award: The Cambridge-Africa ALBORADA Research Fund competitively awards grants of between £1,000 and £20,000, for:

  • research costs (such as reagents, fieldwork and equipment)
  • research-related travel between Cambridge and Africa
  • conducting research training activities in Africa (e.g. setting up courses/workshops).
