Fakugesi 2022 Awards for digital creativity

The inaugural Fak’ugesi 2022 Awards for Digital Creativity are the first awards of their kind, recognising digital innovation in creativity across the countries of Africa. Since our inception 9 years ago we have seen, worked with and applauded the meteoric rise of African creativity in the digital space. In 2022, we want to further this growth by awarding the best works in five categories: arts (visual, performance), animation, music, video games, and extended reality (AR, VR).

The Fak’ugesi Awards trophies are unique representations of the spark of innovation, our iconic lightning bolt motif comes to life at dusk with an internal led light array.

The Hopper Prize (Grants for artists)

The Hopper Prize was established to provide grants, visibility, and career-enhancing validation to artists who demonstrate a serious commitment to their work.

They accept submissions for grants through a bi-annual open call. Each grant cycle is juried by a new team of contemporary curators who select grant winners on the basis of artistic excellence and the promise of future potential. They provide unrestricted cash grants in the amount of $3,500 and $1,000 to artists around the globe.

Call for Submissions – The New River: A Journal of Digital Art & Literature

The New River is a journal of digital writing and art, originally created and edited by Edward Falco. The current managing editors are graduate students enrolled in the MFA in Creative Writing or MFA Creative Technologies program at Virginia Tech. They are interested in receiving submissions of original and unpublished digital writing and art (such as new media art, electronic literature, web-based sound art, computational text, moving image work, and anything in between). Before submitting, please review their past issues to familiarize yourself with the kind of work we showcase in our journal.

Call for creatives: Display your digital portfolio with Humusha Art & Science

#Humusha is the isiZulu translation for ‘interpret’ or ‘translate’. A collaboration between the South African Research Chair in Science Communication (SciCom) at Stellenbosch University and VANSA (Visual Arts Network of South Africa), Humusha provides a platform where applied artists and scientific researchers can find one another and work together. Visual communication is used as a key conduit that can bring together art and science, making science accessible to the public and aligning with the SciCom goal of using science for social change and justice.

Content Partnerships Lead (Entertainment) at Tik Tok

The Entertainment Partnership Lead for Sub-Saharan Africa will be responsible for growing the Entertainment space and vertical on TikTok in the region. This job will require you to develop a comprehensive localized strategy to drive creator development and growth pipeline for the Entertainment vertical, with a focus on PGC/PUGC (top creators, publishers, public figures), among other responsibilities.

Celebrity fashion designer Gert-Johan Coetzee plans to grow the South African fashion industry through the Gert-Johan Coetzee bursary programme. The winner of this bursary will win a three-year bursary to study Fashion Design at his alma mater, North West School of Design in Klerksdorp.

The North West School of Design Fashion Design course, worth over R 187 000.00, provides a broad spectrum of knowledge that provides graduates with extensive knowledge in fashion illustration, apparel construction, pattern drafting and manipulation and computer-aided design, as well as fashion retail.

The bursary includes tuition for three years, as well as a sewing machine (Bernette – Chicago 5 sewing machine) sponsorship from Bernina RSA.

RESIDENCIES

Web Residencies: Akademie Scholoss Solitude

In the framework of the project Magical Hackerism or The Elasticity of Resilience, SAVVY Contemporary and Akademie Schloss Solitude’s Digital program offer four web residencies to practitioners and communities within the tropical belt, exploring situated knowledges, forming local DIT (Do It Together) community networks, and/or connecting intertropically on a planetary level.

During this six-week online residency, we will offer support to set up a local community network using a Raspberry Pi, where your situated knowledge exploration can be hosted.

EPFL CDH Artist-in-Residence Programme

Located in Switzerland, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL) is a leading university and one of Europe’s most vibrant and cosmopolitan science and technology institutions. EPFL hosts more than 350 labs at its international campus in the Lausanne area.

After the program’s successful launch in 2022, CDH Direction is now welcoming proposals for its Enter the Hyper-Scientific 2023 edition.

Initiated by EPFL College of Humanities (CDH) Direction, amplified by EPFL Pavilions, and now inaugurating a partnership with The City of Lausanne, the EPFL CDH Artist-in-Residence Programme promotes artistic research and experimentation that connects art, humanities, science, and technology by supporting up to four artists for three-months residencies at the EPFL.

Künstlerhaus Dortmund Summer Residency

Since 2005, Künstlerhaus Dortmund has been offering an artist residency in the summer months for artists from abroad in all fields of the visual arts.

The residency period will be 4-6 weeks and can begin in mid-July by arrangement. Künstlerhaus Dortmund will offer free accommodation as well as a working space, travel allowance and subsidy for living and production costs.

A presentation at the end of the residency will be supported. The Künstlerhaus will take care of the press and publicity work as well as the invitation cards. The Künstlerhaus will support the guest artist in all organisational and practical matters.

Künstlerhaus Lauenburg Residency

Künstlerhaus Lauenburg was founded in 1986 and is an international scholarship holder’s place of the state of Schleswig-Holstein for contemporary visual arts, literature and composition. It offers young talents from all over the world the opportunity to realize new projects in an undisturbed working environment and to present them publicly to an interested audience.

Every year, Künstlerhaus Lauenburg regularly awards 3 residence scholarships in the fields of composition, literature and visual arts and automatically awards a scholarship in the field of visual arts by invitation to an artist. Artists can apply for the 3 residency scholarships without limiting their age or residence.

Columbia University Institute for Ideas and Imagination Fellowship 

Bringing together creative artists of all kinds with scholars from across the humanities and sciences, the purpose of the Institute is to question the established ways in which knowledge is defined, produced, and taught.

The Fellowship stipend is $37,500 per term, or $75,000 for a full academic year (September through May). Fellows also have their own office at the Institute in Paris, administrative and research support and access to Columbia’s libraries and various research facilities in Paris and in Europe.
