That Time Queertopia Saved Our Lives

Even if just for a moment, sometimes a DJ saves your life. Sometimes it’s more than a moment—a day or two. Sometimes it’s not just a DJ, but a performer, or an event. Set within the historic walls of Constitution Hill, aptly by the Women’s Jail, between the 24th and the 25th of February, Queertopia, the riotous celebration of sheer joy for queer folk and allies alike was that saviour for us. While it was certain that a splendid time was had by all, it was also abundantly clear that Queertopia had become more than just a festival; but a movement in the making.

Queertopia

While South Africa and the continent as a whole are often viewed as hostile environments for the LGBTQIA+ community, it’s worth taking stock of the heroes that make it, simultaneously, queer heaven. Queertopia is the brainchild of the Other Village People (OVP), who began with a spirited missionto create a space where queer communities could not only safely exist but thrive. Andiswa Dlamini, aka DJ AN.D, and curator Kefiloe Siwisa, are not only the creative visionaries behind Other Village People, but lovers and the epitome of queer couple goals.

The roots of Queertopia can be traced back to Same Sex Saturdays (SSS), an initiative born out of the desire to fill the void of safe and inclusive spaces for the queer community. What started as a local affair in Durban quickly blossomed into a movement that spanned major South African cities, bringing together queer folks from all walks of life. The success of Same Sex Saturdays made Andiswa and Kefiloe realise that the time had come to transcend traditional club environments and create something more extraordinary.

They started with Groundeda series of intimate gatherings designed to foster meaningful connections beyond the dance floor. From serene hikes to convivial dinners, Grounded provided a sanctuary for queer individuals to forge friendships and support networks, all while basking in the warmth of acceptance and camaraderie. But it was with the inception of Queertopia, a jubilant two-day celebration of queer culture, with performances, film screenings, group discussions, and art exhibitions, that OVP truly hit their stride.

Exceeding every expectation, this year, Queertopia was a fun and well-organised affair, attended by the cutest hunties on this side of the globe. Partnering with Jägermeister‘s Night Embassy, the festival boasted excellent signage and support, with a diverse lineup, featuring acts like Buhlebendalo, the rising star in full and stunningly sexy traditional Xhosa garb, who gave an unforgettable performance; The Brother Moves On, with lead singer Siyabonga Mthembu bringing that maternal energy in the moomoo and house slippers; and Thandiswa Mazwai, arguably the most iconic queer icon and rockstar to come out of Mzansi. The performances were both familiar and phenomenal, and the atmosphere was both electric and elevated, making one feel a sense of both belonging and wonder.

What sets Queertopia apart is the fact that it is truly driven by and focused on the community. Andi and Kefiloe are not only important figures within the community, who have the foresight to produce such an experience, but they are also there with us, on the dance floor and in the trenches. By addressing systemic barriers, whilst ferociously advocating for sustainable queer joy and togetherness, they are laying the groundwork for enduring change. In their own words, “Collaboration is the key to our success. When we come together with intention and integrity, there’s no limit to what we can achieve.”

Of Queertopia, OVP posted, “Life will never be the same again” and we know that’s right! Simply by existing, Queertopia is paving the way for a future free from discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. As it evolves, it will become the quintessential Joburg festival and draw visitors from across the globe who wish to see the beautiful diversity of South Africa’s queer community.  Looking ahead, the sky is the limit for the festival’s future and who knows the heights it will reach. For now, it remains true to its values of inclusivity and love, something we all could use a little more of.
