The SoCreative Summit: A Confluence of Ideas, Innovation, and Inspiration

The creative landscape is ever-evolving, driven by the constant flow of ideas, innovation, and collaboration. In the heart of Johannesburg’s vibrant Victoria Yards complex, the SoCreative Summit is a melting pot for cultural makers and creative thinkers from around the globe. Hosted by the British Council and Business and Arts South Africa, this electrifying event promises to be an immersive experience, igniting conversations, sparking connections, and shaping the future of creativity, both locally and abroad. Although this is a free event, registration is essential as numbers are limited.

Exploring the Theme of Emergence

At the core of the 2024 SoCreative Summit lies the theme of Emergence. It encapsulates the dynamic state of change, the raw materials that shape our world, and the constant flux of ideas and innovations. From communal patterning to zeitgeist-defining moments, the Summit will explore the essence of emergence, inviting participants to embark on a journey of curiosity and discovery.

A Multifaceted Programme

The Summit, hosted by Arts Curator and Strategist, Lungi Morrison, unfolds across various spaces within Victoria Yards, each offering a unique perspective and immersive experience. From the main hall, known as ASSEMBLY, to active session spaces like WORKSHOPS and the surrounding FRINGE areas, participants will be immersed in an extravaganza of creativity and inspiration.

Day One

After registration and bringing your pre-loved book to put into the book swap, both days of the Summit will start with a wellness immersion facilitated by Dr Sarah Mars. Throughout the day, participants will have the opportunity to engage in a variety of sessions, from organisational immersions and workshops to panel discussions, portals, and guided tours. Whether exploring pathways to social consciousness or the role of African indigenous knowledge systems in creative work, each session will offer a unique perspective on creative and cultural emergence and its impact on our world. Speakers from across Africa and the UK join the line-up of South African thought leaders and innovators on the programme. Among them are such as Amukelani Muyanga and Pumla Maswanganyi, adding depth and diversity to the discourse. Their insights prompt reflection on integrating traditional African wisdom into our creative endeavours, initiating a profound reconsideration of our approach. Additionally, Patrick Sam’s virtual keynote extends from promoting cross-cultural exchange to challenging stereotypes, illuminating the transformative power of art in shaping perceptions.

Day Two

On the second day, participants will gather once again for a wellness immersion experience, this time through a serene seated yoga session. The featured keynote by Monika Bielskyte will explore the concept of Protopia, offering an antidote to fears of the future and highlighting the importance of informed hope in shaping our collective destiny.

The day will unfold with myriad options for engagement, from fast-paced Pecha Kucha sessions to guided tours of Victoria Yards and interactive workshops on creative investment and AI technology. Some of this year’s stellar PechaKucha line-up of creative speakers include artists Kay Kay Ribane, Eduardo Cachucho, ByLwansta and Jeani Varty. The culmination of the Summit sees the Pitch Den, where finalists will have the opportunity to present their most compelling pitches for a chance to win funding and support for their creative endeavours.

The Book Swap and Bookshop will provide opportunities for networking and exploration, while the BASA Connect Lounge will offer a space for relaxation and connection.

Celebrating Creativity

As the SoCreative Summit draws to an end, participants will have ample opportunities to celebrate creativity, collaboration, and the power of emergence. With performances by local artists and the announcement of Pitch Den winners, the Summit will make a noteworthy contribution to the transformative potential of creativity in shaping our world.
