I don’t know if the rest of the country had it, but there was a time in Durban where everyone was into house music (they still are tbh) and rooftop foam parties were a THING. From Joe Kools to The Pavilion Shopping Center, belly button piercings were on show as teenagers pushed the boundaries of public displays of affection amongst soap bubbles. Listening to Dwson and Sió’s nostalgic house number “Nobody Else” reminds me of that time. Maybe it’ll conjure up something different for you, but those are the memories I see when I close my eyes and hit play on the song.
However, in front of my and your eyes is the premiere of the music video for this sexy yet sombre track. The gorgeous video, directed and edited by Ian Henderson, takes a moodier approach than my imagination and one that helps tell the story of the song. You’ll be enchanted by a lonely Sió as we follow her through her day at home as she laments that the man that she’s enamoured with has left her on her own, again. Sió is as captivating in the video as she is on the song, and watching her breathe meaning into her own words through her actions is a real treat. While my first listen of the song brought up pleasant memories of jols gone by, after seeing the video and actually listening to the lyrics, the memories are less pleasant and I’m reminded that those passionate nights can turn to painful days.
If you’re unfamiliar with Dwson, this is a fantastic introduction to what this house music producer can do, and you should go check out the rest of his ‘Glimpse of You’ EP, which “Nobody Else” is the first single off of. Dwson has been in the game for about 4 years if his Soundcloud is an accurate reflection, and over that time he’s racked bookings at most of the big name South African festivals like Oppikoppi, Cape Town Electronic Music Festival, Rocking the Daisies, Synergy and Redbull Music Festival Johannesburg. With the release of his ‘Glimpse of You’ EP, and now this music video, Dwson is proving himself to be a force to be reckoned with on the South African house music scene.
