It’s Dry, But You Can’t Drink It

Recently scientists sounded the alarm on Earth’s rising temperatures. With global temperatures expected to rise by 1.5 degrees Celsius, the world is on track to breach a critical warming threshold in the next five years. Global temperatures have soared in recent years, as the planet continues to burn fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and gas, which have dire effects on the planet. Investing in sustainability methods has never been more critical than it is now. In South Africa, the company that is taking a step towards sustainability is Savanna Premium Cider

In collaboration with renowned South African designer Wanda Lephoto, Savanna Premium Cider has unveiled its latest fashion collection, Dry Goods—this is a line of waterproof apparel designed specifically for a world underwater. The unique collection is made from 100% recycled materials, showcasing style and innovation and conveying a powerful message about the need to take actionable steps to address climate change.

With rising sea levels, more flora and fauna species going extinct, melting icebergs and unpredictable weather patterns, Savanna’s Dry Goods is setting the standard in leading the conversation around sustainability.

However, up-cycled clothing is not all Savanna has its sights on. The brand’s commitment to sustainability extends to the digital realm of non-fungible tokens (NFTs). In collaboration with Wanda Lephoto and Metalabs Africa, Savanna will be at the forefront of creating a unique set of digital collectables.

Through close work with Wanda Lephoto, Savanna has crafted six unique outfits that are exclusively available as 3D models in the form of NFTs. An auction for these NFTs was held on the 25th of April on the Nifty Gateway digital art auction platform. Each NFT was minted to be on the Ethereal Network, which due to its recent transition from Proof of Work to Proof of Stake, has significantly reduced its electricity consumption and carbon footprint, further emphasising Savanna’s sustainability message.

While NFTs are a good way to use fewer materials to create art, it is not sufficient enough to deliver a strong message about sustainability. For this reason, Savanna decided to take things a step further with a groundbreaking idea. In the first-of-its-kind initiative, Savanna in partnership with Wanda Lephoto and Metalabs created a digital collectible by recycling the data of brunt NFTs, effectively creating the world’s first recycled NFT garment.

This groundbreaking digital piece was auctioned for one day only on the 29th of April, again on the Nifty Gateway platform. The recycled data garment was accompanied by a digital avatar that can be utilised in various metaverses. By creating digital collectables and recycling disused NFTs, Savanna and its collaborators highlight the importance of considering environmental impact in all aspects of our lives, including the digital realm.

Savanna’s Dry Goods collection sets a new standard for environmentally conscious apparel by combining fashion, technology and a commitment to sustainability. The use of recycled materials not only reduces waste but also showcases the potential for creativity and innovation within the fashion industry. This collaboration with Wanda Lephoto not only brings their unique design aesthetic to the collection but also amplifies the message of sustainable living.100% of the proceeds from these sales will be donated to GreenUp, a leading organisation dedicated to climate action, environmental education and community resilience.

As climate change continues to threaten the existence of humanity and everything on Mother Earth, sustainability is the only way forward. Savanna’s Dry Goods collection, created in collaboration with Wanda Lephoto, represents a significant step forward in a sustainable fashion. By utilising recycled materials, exploring the world of NFTs and supporting a worthy cause, the brand is driving the “Go Green” conversation forward.
