MaXhosa Africa AW25 // Tradition Encounters Trend at MXS Kulture Fest

There’s always something going down in Jozi and sometimes it seems like MaXhosa Africa is always somehow in the mix. But this time, the renowned South African luxury fashion brand is leading the charge. On the 23rd of March, Joburgers will be treated to the MXS Kulture Festival, featuring MaXhosa Africa’s debut of its AW25 collection. This immersive celebration promises to showcase not only the brand’s latest designs but also provide a vibe through the richness of South African culture, food, and music.

Founded in 2010 by Laduma Ngxokolo, stemming from his personal experience, the brand initially focused on creating innovative knitwear solutions for amakrwala (Xhosa initiates). Drawing inspiration from traditional beadwork patterns, symbolism, and colours, MaXhosa Africa offers a contemporary interpretation of Xhosa culture. Today, the brand is a leading figure in African luxury, catering to premium and mass heritage fashion and lifestyle needs.

Unathi Nkayi interviewed Laduma Ngxokolo at a recent press conference, where they discussed MaXhosa Africa’s expansion from local roots to global recognition, marked by its participation in prestigious events like Paris and London Fashion Week. The conversation touched on MaXhosa Africa’s shift towards women’s wear and its plans to expand into accessories. They discussed the Kulture Festival, where MaXhosa Africa will offer a preview of new ventures, including homeware, showcasing tradition with a modern twist.

Ngxokolo said, “We believe it is important to add value to our economy by producing locally  … This collection highlights the resources, talent, and techniques we have right here in South Africa. We envision South Africa as a luxury manufacturing hub, and this collection is a testament to that vision.  … Fashion and music are languages of our history and heritage,” Ngxokolo added. “They tell our story, define our present, and inspire future generations.”

Set for Saturday, 23rd March, the MXS Kulture festival will take over the scenic gardens of the Sargent Family Hotel, becoming a vibrant hub of creativity and cultural exchange. Here, MaXhosa Africa will unveil its latest collection, aptly titled Conviction. Following the success of last year’s MXS sustainability festival at Nirox Sculpture Park, the Kulture festival promises to offer attendees fresh insights into MaXhosa Africa’s current ventures, including new partnerships, bold styles, and a sneak peek at their upcoming homeware collection.

Known for its abstract patterns and dynamic designs, MaXhosa Africa’s AW25 collection ventures into new territory with an unexpected exploration palette, including greys and purples, and an expanded range of accessories and statement pieces. Following a successful showcase of a capsule collection at Paris Fashion Week, this marks the first full presentation of the collection on African soil.

But visitors will be getting so much more than fashion at the event. The festival’s lineup features performances by popular local acts such as Sjava, Kitchen Mess, Oscar Mbo and QUE DJ. The dynamic duo known as 2wobunnies is set to infuse an authentic Amapiano vibe into the festival. If, like us, you simply cannot wait, consider attending the #MXSKULTUREFESTIVAL Pre-party this Friday at Rooftop at Hallmark. This party before the party promises to provide snippets of the main event, offering guaranteed entry for ticket holders through the RSVP link.

Tickets to the MXS Kulture Festival offer access to a full day of music, fashion, and cultural experiences, complete with a MaXhosa Africa tote bag filled with complimentary gifts valued at R7500, plus food and drink vouchers. The event will be held at the Sargeant Family Estate in Henley on Klip, Meyerton on Saturday, 23 March 2024, from 11 am to 10 pm, with the fashion show starting at 4 pm. Ticket prices start at R1500 for Phase 1 and R1800 for Phase 2.

Maxhosa Collections have always shown us that MaXhosa Africa is more than just a luxury fashion brand. Its loyalty to its roots and fearless innovation, make it a gem of the African continent. The brand’s continuous commitment to African creativity and craftsmanship is worth celebrating. Through this blend of music and fashion, MaXhosa Africa continues to champion heritage and culture, adding to the likelihood that, like its parent company, MXS Kulture Festival might also eventually become a formidable institution in its own right.
